About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant heart of New York's Greenwich Village, Semma offers an exceptional journey into the rich and diverse flavors of South Indian cuisine. More than just a meal, dining at Semma is an immersive experience that deftly balances tradition with modern flair—each dish a testament to bold spices, impeccable technique, and regional authenticity.

The menu at Semma reads like a love letter to South India’s culinary heritage, with standout dishes that draw rave reviews from both newcomers and seasoned food lovers alike. The Paniyaram, airy and golden fried lentil dumplings, deliver an addictive crunch layered with subtle, savory depth. The Dindigul Biryani and Lobster Tail showcase the kitchen’s mastery of flavor complexity—spices perfectly harmonized to enhance rather than overpower, resulting in deeply satisfying plates.

Dishes such as the Meen Pollichathu Sea Bass and the intriguing Goanese Oxtail reveal the chef’s bold creativity, merging coastal and rustic flavors with a contemporary presentation. The Flaky Parotta, light yet indulgent, is an ideal companion to the tender short rib or the famously flavorful lamb chops, both of which have been praised for their melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich, nuanced seasoning.

Semma’s vibrant spice palette is expertly calibrated to please a wide range of palates—whether you crave the piquant punch of Mulaikattiya Thaniyam, a sprouted mung bean dish with smoked chili, or prefer to savor subtler notes in the tangy Kollu Rasam, a fiery tomato-tamarind broth. Vegetarian options like the Uzhavar Santhai Poriyal, with an earthy blend of beets, butternut squash, and mustard greens, showcase the kitchen’s commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients.

The dining atmosphere is lively yet intimate, enhanced by attentive and warm service that makes guests feel genuinely welcomed from the moment they step in. It’s no surprise that celebrations—from birthdays to special dinners—find a perfect home here. Guests often note the fun, spirited energy of the space combined with meticulous care in service that elevates the overall experience.

The dessert offerings provide a delightful finale, with options like the creamy Elaneer Payasam, fragrant Passion Fruit Pudding, and traditional Shahi Tukda that leave a lasting, sweet impression. Equally notable are the thoughtfully crafted zero-proof cocktails and innovative drinks such as the Panakkaran Old Fashioned, rounding out a meal that’s as sophisticated as it is soul-satisfying.

Real diners consistently celebrate Semma for not only living up to its Michelin star acclaim but for delivering moments of surprising joy and indulgence. The scallops, for example, are often singled out for their buttery texture and bright fruit-infused sauces, while the dosa—especially the gunpowder dosa—is heralded as irresistibly crispy, spicy, and utterly addictive.

For those seeking a genuine taste of South India in New York City—a place where each bite tells a story and every dish is crafted with reverence and passion—Semma promises a culinary adventure that’s both authentic and unforgettable.

Obviously had high expectations when I saw the Michelin star at the front of the restaurant. But it lived up to the hype honestly. The dosa app was super flavorful, and had a great spice level. Short Rib was so tender, so delicious, and paired really nicely with the Parrota bread. Scallops might've been the bite of the night. Pineapple and mango flavor, in a buttery, perfectly cooked scallop. Only 2 pieces for $23 but I thought it was absolutely amazing. The Lobster Tail was also so good. I'd recommend ordering coconut rice on the side, as the curry that came with the lobster paid beautifully with the rice. Overall excellent experience. For a Michelin star restaurant with this much social media hype, the prices were not too bad. Would absolutely come back.

Honestly so amazed and impressed with our meal here. Everything we ordered was delicious and so well made! We were greeted immediately when we arrived and taken to our seats. We started with the tiger prawn which were two huge prawns. Delicious and super flavorful. Next we had the lamb chops, dosa and lobster. The lobster was definitely the highlight of the meal it was amazing. We keep thinking about it even weeks after coming here. We will definitely be back!

We had a fantastic birthday dinner at Semma. Fun atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, and delicious food. Their menu had several vegetarian dishes, including all the dishes below. The highlight is the gunpowder dosa. They’re incredibly flavorful, spicy and crispy. Highly addictive. Honestly, one dosa is basically a meal by itself. The paniyaram are fried lentil dumplings, which are also delicious. Great vegetarian appetizer. The parotta bread was flaky and buttery. The gutti vankaya (baby eggplant) was nicely made, but truthfully we were so full that we couldn’t really appreciate it. We even got a surprise birthday ice cream, which was very kind of them and a great moment. The passion fruit pudding was very good, a really unique flavor and texture. The servers were really great, helpfully walking through the highlights in the menu and making good suggestions. We had a great time! A great place for vegetarian diners.

Reservations required. Michelin star rated, high expectations. Did not disappoint, attentive wait staff, we tried quite a few dishes. Favorites were the dosa and the lamb chops. They were amazing. Presentation of food was delicious. Lamb was so tender and flavorful. We did pre order the crab, it get a little messy, but was delicious. Spice level was on the lower end for Indian food in my opinion, but was still delicious. From the appetizers to the desserts, recommend all of it.

Snagged an early dinner reservation for five at Semma. I went in with mixed feelings, not sure if it would live up to the hype but it absolutely did. This was hands down the best non–North Indian food I’ve had in New York. We tried a variety of dishes, and I’d recommend every single one. The paniyaram were light and airy lentil dough balls, the scallops came with a unique sweet-tangy sauce, and the tiger prawns packed a bold, spicy, peppery punch. The masala dosa was such a hit that even though we ordered two for the table, they disappeared instantly. I’d go back just for the dosa. The beef short rib was outstanding melt-in-your-mouth tender with a distinct peppery flavor. Definitely order the kal dosa and parotta to soak up the incredible sauces. The eggplant was another highlight, enjoyed equally by the meat eaters at the table, and the biryani was flavorful with just the right kick from green chilies without being overwhelming. We finished with the rice pudding, even though we thought we had no room left. Honestly, I can’t pick a favorite. Each dish had its own distinct personality. The food is exceptional, the service is warm, friendly, and informative, and the experience really showcases the rich flavors of South Indian cuisine. Yes, it’s pricey but absolutely worth it. Highly recommend Semma!

Absolutely phenomenal experience from start to finish! We walked in without a reservation, and the staff was incredibly kind, helpful, and accommodating. They went out of their way to help us get seats, which truly says a lot about their hospitality. The food was on another level it was bold, perfectly balanced flavors and deeply authentic South Indian cuisine. Every single dish was memorable and tasted like it was prepared with passion and tradition. The customer service matched the food with warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. A reservation is definitely recommended because this place is always in demand, but even without one, they made us feel taken care of. Truly Michelin-worthy, and without a doubt one of the best dining experiences in NYC. We will absolutely be coming back!

Amazing service and food. Enjoyed the service right from the door to the to-go parcel delivered. Waitress was very knowledgeable, kind and accommodating to our preferences. Felt very inclusive (a rarity in NYC). Gunpowder dosa was amazing with the sambar. Sambar took me to childhood Indian wedding season memories. Enjoyed the cocktails, crab masal (pre-ordered) and ellani payasam. The finishing touch and high note was the beautiful card and dessert for our anniversary celebration. The personal attention of a casual conversation mention did it for us. Semma was a delight and decadent, a treasured memory to take home. P.s. Staff were very attentive to every small detail. A glass going half-empty was quickly refilled, a spoon dropped to the floor in between meals was quickly swipped, tables were cleaned and wiped before dessert, patrons were not rushed out but tables were restated within seconds of departure to welcome the next party.
